There are some important things to note about pools and spas if you have one or are thinking about getting one.

• A building permit is required before installing a new pool, spa, or barrier.
• This permit needs to be issued by registered building surveyor.
• Building work must start within 12 months of the building permit being issued.

• During construction, if a new pool is filled with more than 30cm of water it must have a temporary safety barrier put around it.

If you have an outdoor pool or spa there are certain safety regulations that must be adhered to create the optimal environment for safety and enjoyment.
ALL swimming pools and spas in residential properties with a depth greater than 30cm (300mm) are required to be surrounded by an appropriate safety barrier, for example a pool fence.

There are specific laws for barriers for pools and spas. These include:

SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR THE BARRIER:

 - Safety barriers must be 1.2m high.
 - climbable objects must not be placed next to the barrier.
 - The bottom of the barrier should be no more than 10cm (100mm) from the ground.
 - There should be no vertical gaps in the barrier more than 10cm (100mm) apart.
 - If you’ve used perforated or mesh fencing, the barrier holes should be 13 mm or less.

SAFETY CHECKLIST FOR POOL GATE:

 - Must open outward from the pool.
 - Barrier gates must be self closing and self - latching.
 - Barrier latch must be more than 1.5m from the ground

Most importantly, no rust, holes, or broken rails should be found in the pool fence. It should be in good working condition and well-maintained!
