Building standards of stairways

Here at Inspect Direct we are working to keep building standards high. We look at ever detail of a property to ensure it fits the right specifications.
We always have a keen eye for specific measurements and properties within all elements of a property.
Even steps and staircases have specific measurements they must abide by to comply with OH&S. We measure everything, from the length and width of every step, to the angle of the stairway

COMMON STAIRWAY TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Riser : A riser is the vertical measurement of each stair. Risers can either be enclosed or left open, as in deck stairs or basement stairs.
  • Going: Sometimes called the run is the horizontal section of each stair, this is the part you step on. This is measured from the end of one step to the start of the next.
  • Stair width : When we say width , we are referring to the measurement of risers and goings from side to side, as if you were walking up or down the stairs.
  • Landing: means an area at the top or bottom of a flight or between two flights.

STAIRWAY ANGLES

Even the angle of elevation of a stairway must hit certain measurements.
The angle of the stairs slope to the horizontal is 20° to 45°, but it is recommended to have the range between 30° and 38°.

STAIRWAY CLEARANCES

Stairways shall be ≥ 600mm wide and it is to have a minimum clearance of 550mm between rails.

For stair landing; the width of the landing shall not be less than the stairway width and a minimum of 600 mm clear of cross-traffic, door swing or any other structure.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY!

Minimum headroom is typically 2000 mm.

In applications where the minimum headroom cannot be achieved, other measures should be taken, Such as signage, padding and highlighting.

FLIGHTS AND LANDINGS

There is to be a maximum of no more than 18 risers in a flight of stairs. A flat platform, or a landing, will be used to connect adjacent flights.
This is to ensure safety in case of falling, to ensure they don't fall more than 36 risers.

This safety precaution is achieved through making the landing≥ 2m in length, oror a change in direction of the stairway of ≥90°.

The landing of a flight of stairs should:
Not be less than 750 mm long and where this involves a change in direction, the length is measured 500 mm from the inside edge of the landing and
have a gradient not steeper than 1:50; and
be provided where the sill of a threshold of a doorway opens on to a stair that provides a change in floor level or floor to ground level greater than 3 risers or 570 mm.

STAIRWAY GUARDRAILS AND HANDRAILS

Except where there is a fixed structure within 100 mm of the stairway stile, stairways and stairway landings shall be provided with guardrailing on any exposed side.

Every stairway shall have at least one handrail and a handrail on each side for stairway wider than 1000mm.

THAT'S A WRAP!
We believe its the smaller details that are the main ingredients in ensuring that a property is at its best!
We ensure these things for your optimal comfort in your new home, so that everything runs smoothly in the future.
